One Visit Dental Crowns

dental crowns

At Old Milton Dental, we value your time and understand that it can be difficult to schedule appointments during regular business hours.

If your teeth are discolored or chipped, you might not feel much like smiling. And if they’re significantly damaged, you’ll probably find that it’s difficult to chew. You may also experience discomfort. Dental crowns can help with both cosmetic and functional issues. A crown is a means of fully restoring a damaged tooth to its original condition, or better. Dental crowns are made out of porcelain, which is the material that is most like natural teeth, and they can even be colored to match.

You could have a dental crown installed on a single tooth, or even on all of your teeth. At Old Milton Dental in Alpharetta, GA, we use the CEREC® method of creating dental crowns.

The CEREC® Method

CEREC® is actually an acronym, standing for “Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic.” Don’t worry about remembering that – there won’t be a test. All you really need to know is that CEREC® brings dental restoration firmly into the 21st century. With CEREC®, your dentist uses computer imaging to examine and create a model of your teeth, and then make and install your dental crowns.

The Procedure

Dental Crowns

To begin with, your dentist will examine your teeth using the CEREC® machine. He will take images of the teeth that need to be treated, and then make three-dimensional images of them. These are what will be used to create your dental crowns. All the imaging is done on the computer screen, and then the images are sent to the milling machine, which makes the crowns. Your dentist will choose a piece of ceramic that closely matches the color of your teeth, and the milling machine will do the rest of the work. Once your crowns are created, the dentist will cement them in place.

Inlays and Onlays

The CEREC® method is also used to create inlays and onlays. These are similar to crowns in that they are also made from porcelain, or from a special type of composite resin which can also be colored to match your natural teeth. Inlays are used to treat tooth decay in the cusps (those protrusions that you feel when you move your tongue over your back teeth). Onlays are used to fix decay that affects several cusps. That is really the only way in which they differ – the installation process is identical.

Caring for Your Crowns

You do not have to do anything special to take care of your dental crowns. All that is needed is regular brushing and flossing, the same as you would do for your natural teeth. You should also visit your dentist office for regular checkups and cleanings. Keep in mind, though, that your crowns are subject to the same type of damage as your own teeth – if you grind your teeth, bite down hard, or sustain trauma to your mouth, your crowns could be damaged.
