Invisalign®

Invisalign®

We can almost certainly take it on faith that no one wants to wear metal braces. They can be painful when it comes time to have them adjusted, and no one is ever going to claim that they are attractive. Adults might be able to laugh off the comments about “railroad tracks” in their mouth, but teenagers have enough problems with their self-image without having to contend with wisecracks that might be good-natured, or might not..

Fortunately, there is an alternative to unsightly metal braces. At Old Milton Dental in Alpharetta, we offer Invisalign® clear aligners. They are very different from metal braces in terms of appearance, but they work in the same way to correct a misaligned bite or crooked teeth. If you choose not to tell anyone that you are wearing Invisalign clear braces, it’s very likely that no one will know.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign®?

Historically, there has been a trade-off. No one has ever wanted to have a bad bite or crooked teeth, but by the same token, no one has ever wanted to wear metal braces. Living with the metal braces has always been the price that had to be paid for better-looking teeth down the road, and often that price had to be paid for years on end.

With Invisalign clear aligners, the braces are barely discernable, and they can even be removed. Removability means that you never have to worry about food being trapped under your braces, leading to decay later on. You can take them out when you eat, brush and floss as you would if you had no braces, and then put them back on. The benefit here is huge – one of the biggest problems with metal braces has always been food getting trapped in and around them. It is very hard to clean around metal braces, and that means that there is a huge potential for decay on the front of the teeth where it is horribly visible and very difficult to correct. This problem is eliminated with Invisalign removable clear aligners.

What is the process?

Invisalign®Before you are fitted with your Invisalign braces, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth, and then use special software to create the Invisalign aligners. Most patients will go through a number of sets of aligners. The first sets simply fits over the teeth exactly as they are in the beginning. Then, several sets of aligners offer varying degrees of correction, until the final set fits over the teeth the way they are intended to end up. You could actually end up wearing as many as 30 aligners.

If you think that this is going to mean a lot of visits to your dentist (and therefore a lot of expense), though, you will be pleasantly surprised. All your aligners will be created at once, and you will simply change them regularly at home. Of course, you will need to come and see us from time to time at Old Milton Dental in Alpharetta, for checkups, to make sure that your treatment is working the way it is intended. You will not, however, be subjected to the painful tightenings that you would have to expect if you had conventional metal braces. Most patients are a candidate for this alternative to braces.
