5 Reasons You Need Dental Implants

5 Reasons You Need Dental Implants

Dental implants are without a doubt the best way to replace missing teeth. The implant itself is a tiny post made from titanium that is used to support a dental crown. The implant is placed in the socket that formerly held a tooth, and the crown is placed on top. One implant can support several crowns, and usually to restore an entire set of upper or lower teeth you will only need a maximum of four implants. There are five reasons you could need dental implants.

1. Implants Look and Feel Natural

The teeth you are born with have roots that hold them in your jawbone. An implant replaces the tooth root, and fuses to your jawbone, so it is a permanent structure. The crown that is placed atop the implant is made to match your natural teeth, so unless it pleases you to tell people that you have implants, they will have no idea that they are not seeing your natural teeth.

2. Implants Can Last Forever

Dentures and bridges may need to be repaired or replaced, but if you look after your implants with regular brushing and flossing, they will need no other care. In fact, you can expect them to last you the rest of your life.

3. Implants Prevent Bone Loss

Bone needs to be stimulated if it is going to remain healthy. Your jawbone is stimulated by your teeth, and when teeth are lost, the underlying bone structure begins to deteriorate. Dental implants stop this from happening because they stabilize your jaw. Removable dentures and bridgework will not stop bone loss, so if you are concerned about bone loss that is one of the best reasons to need dental implants.

4. Implants are Better for Your Remaining Teeth

A dental bridge is installed by using the teeth adjacent to the gap to hold the bridge. This can cause decay due to pressure. Partial dentures also need adjacent teeth to hold them in place, and may result in the adjacent teeth loosening. Dental implants do not need support from your other teeth, so they have no adverse effects.

5. Implants are Easy to Look After

You will never have to worry about adhesives or creams, or soaking your implants the way you would dentures. Keep in mind, though, that if you develop gum disease, your implants could fail, so you still have to brush and floss.
