Fluoride in Water

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has named water fluoridation one of the top 10 greatest public health achievements in the 20th century.  A substance called fluoride is naturally found in all water types and provides significant benefits to cavity prevention and tooth development.

Fluoride is an ionic compound of the element fluorine. Although this ion is found in all water sources, it is found in different concentrations. American communities for over 50 years have added additional amounts of fluoride to water sources in an effort to raise the dental health of community members. Tooth decay has decreased by 50%-60% in Americans since World War II due to water fluoridation. Water fluoridation benefits 73% of the American population today.

Fluoride protects the enamel layer of your teeth. The fluoride acts as a shield against acid and sugars that cause cavities and tooth decay. This shield blocks incoming threats, but it also strengthens the enamel it is protecting. Fluoride reinforces critical minerals that are only found in the tooth enamel.

Water fluoridation is an affordable means to prevent tooth decay. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that every $1 spent on water fluoridation by a community, saves $38 worth of dental treatments and procedures. Individuals of all ages, economic standings, and educational backgrounds, benefit from water fluoridation.

Old Milton Dental is more than willing to discuss fluoride options with you. Although water fluoridation is the most affordable way to protect your teeth, you can see the same benefits of fluoride in other various dental products. Today there are several fluoride rinses, toothpastes, gels, and dietary supplements that will be beneficial for individuals who are at high risk for dental decay. Old Milton Dental is happy to give our recommendations for fluoride products and answer any questions that you may have.  Feel free to contact us and make an appointment today.

Early Oral Cancer Detection

Old Milton Dental has dedicated this blog entry to inform you about preventing a dangerous and vicious cancer known as oral cancer. Oral and throat (pharyngeal) cancer have the highest death rates among any other cancers. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports the main factor in this high death rate repeatedly is late diagnosis.

Similar to many types of diseases, early diagnosis can result in uncharted benefits and advantages against the raging disease. Old Milton Dental is ready to help you detect and fight oral cancer.

In your defense against oral cancer, it is critical to understand common symptoms. Most patients see their dentist biannually or annually for check ups and dental cleanings. With several months in between visits, we encourage you to pay attention to conditions in your mouth. If are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please contact our office immediately.

  • A sore in your mouth or on your lip that does not heal in 14 days
  • Red or white patches in your mouth or on your lips
  • A lump felt inside your mouth or on your neck
  • Numbness in your face or mouth
  • Persistent ear aches

Cosmetic Bonding

Old Milton Dental offers cosmetic bonding as part of its cache of cosmetic dentistry procedures. Cosmetic bonding remains one of the least expensive and simplest techniques to perfect your smile. You will be surprised at the great results from such a straightforward procedure.

Cosmetic bonding erases any unwanted characteristics of teeth through the attachment of a thin layer of material, similar to what is used in fillings. This material is the same color as your teeth, making the appearance very natural. Our skilled dentists at Old Milton Dental will apply this thin layer to successfully mask chips, gaps, and discolorations. This procedure is an effective way to change the shape of your teeth, and even make your teeth look longer.

One of the major advantages cosmetic bonding has over other cosmetic procedures is it can be easily repaired if broken or chipped. Some other cosmetic dental procedures have to be completely replaced if damaged. If you maintain good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, and cleanings, you can expect your cosmetic bonding to last up to ten years.

The dental staff at Old Milton Dental will be happy to assess the conditions of your teeth and smile to determine if cosmetic bonding the right option for you.

Child Dentistry

Old Milton Dental believes dental and oral health begins in infancy.  As infants begin to develop their teeth, they are also developing the risk of dental caries (ie. cavities and tooth loss). From teething to braces, it is imperative parents are extremely attentive to the dental health of their children.

Unfortunately, reports have shown that parents are not paying as close attention to their children’s teeth and dental health as may be necessary. In the past decade, the Surgeon General and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has reported tooth decay and cavities as the most chronic ailments in children, as well as teenagers.

“My child just has baby teeth, and eventually they will fall out. We shouldn’t waste our time or money on dental visits for baby teeth.” This is a common argument and justification for not seeing a dentist during early years. Baby teeth will fall out, however oral health needs to begin from infancy, just as nutritional and physical health are priorities. Prevention is essential during this formation years.

Brushing and massaging gums is the first step in establishing dental hygiene. The soft brushing and gentle massaging can help ease the pain many infants experience while they are teething. You can accomplish this using a toothbrush made especially for infants, or a simple washcloth. This will help remove acids from medicines, as well as sugars from milk formulas and baby food.

At 12 months, baby teeth can be brushed with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Teaching children how to brush their teeth early will aid tremendously in forming their own dental hygiene practices. Children will learn the importance of brushing their teeth if it becomes a routine, priority, and their own responsibility.

Our professionals at Old Milton Dental have many suggestions and tips for you as a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, or even teacher. The staff at Old Milton Dental strongly believes in the importance of early dental health and prevention. Visit us today to learn more about dental practices and procedures for children, including fluoride rinses and sealants. Time and effort investments today can result in tremendous savings in dental care in later years.

All Porcelain Crowns

rowns are a type of dental restoration enabling you to use your teeth after damage and decay. In its simplest form, crowns are caps placed over your tooth or dental implant. Old Milton Dental uses crowns made of all porcelain to improve the strength and appearance of your teeth.

All porcelain crowns are the best alternative to a natural tooth. Porcelain crowns give your teeth a natural glow and translucency. Light permeates through the porcelain, reflecting the natural tooth color underneath. The porcelain itself can be easily matched to your natural tooth color and is highly resistant to staining. Your tooth will be healthy and beautiful!

Our porcelain crowns do not have a metal base, which can often leave a dark line where your crown meets your gums. If there is no metal attachment, will porcelain crowns last as long? Yes. At Old Milton Dental, we promise your all porcelain crown is just as durable as any crown made from any other material. Old Milton Dental promises you quality. Our office offers you the best technology, the finest product and material, all while being time efficient.

Dr. Corey Mazer or Dr. Katie Reid may recommend having an all porcelain dental crown placed for a number of reasons.  Root canals and dental implants often require placement of a crown.  Another reason for a dental crown is to protect a weak tooth. Crowns protect teeth that are broken and cracked, restoring them to full functionality. This dental procedure could be a great option and resource for you.

2010 Digital Dentistry Summit

Dr. Corey Mazer, DDS, of Old Milton Dental in Alpharetta, Georgia possesses an unmatched dedication to provide his patients with the most efficient and comfortable services available in preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry. This personal drive and commitment to his Atlanta, Alpharetta, and North Fulton patients, led Dr. Corey Mazer from Alpharetta, Georgia to St. Paul, Minnesota for the 2010 Digital Dentistry Summit.

The Digital Dentistry Summit focused on the latest technology regarding 3M Lava Digital Dental Impressions. The 3M Lava Digital Dental Impression transforms the process of obtaining and reviewing a dental impression.  Impressions, currently taken from plastic trays and gooey material, now can be more accurately obtained and assessed through a high precision wand-like instrument. This light weight and highly maneuverable instrument enables dentists, like Dr. Mazer, to examine the dimensions of a patient’s mouth through 3D video images. These images can be seen immediately and continuously.

Sparked with interest, Dr. Mazer took initiative to investigate this technology. With his Alpharetta, Atlanta, and North Fulton patients in mind, Dr. Mazer personally travelled to see how well this technology and its promises align with the Old Milton Dental philosophy of personal dedication in providing the best service in preventative, restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

Questions inevitably follow technology. How reliable is this technology? How will it affect Atlanta, Alpharetta, and North Fulton patients? These questions resonate in Dr. Mazer and are not taken lightly. Dr. Mazer will carefully consider this new technology and the consequences it will have on Old Milton Dental. Old Milton Dental patients can have confidence in their dentist. A 3M Lava Digital Dental Impression machine will only be welcome if it can provide Alpharetta, Georgia the same efficiency, hard work, and smiles as the Old Milton Dental staff.
